Tulips Wall Hanging

Inspired by Tulips, this wall hanging is an easy and fun pattern to make. It can be used indoors to welcome spring and can also be used outdoors to yarn bomb your garden. This piece is worked in 2 parts and uses acrylic yarn. However any worsted weight yarn can be used.

Yarn

Caron – Simply Soft – medium weight #4 yarn (100% Acrylic; 315 yds/288 m per 6 oz/170.1 g skein)

  • ¼ skein – Cobalt Blue (approx. 70 yards used)
  • ¼ skein – Chartreuse (approx. 70 yards used)
  • ¼ skein – Red (approx. 70 yards used)
  • ¼ skein – Neon Pink (approx. 70 yards used)
  • 1/8 skein – Baby Sunshine (approx. 35 yards used)
  • A – Cobalt Blue, B – Chartreuse, C-Red, D-Neon Pink, E – Baby Sunshine

 

Hook & Other Materials

  • US Size I/9 (5.5mm) crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Wooden Dowel – ¼” diameter X 12” length – (2)

Gauge

14 sc and 15 rows = 4”/10 cm

Gauge is not critical for this project.

 

Abbreviations

Ch – Chain Stitch

Ch-2 sp – Chain 2 Space

Ch-1 sp – Chain 1 Space

Sc – Single Crochet

Dc – Double Crochet

Notes

  1. Similar 4 – Medium weight yarns may be substituted; please check gauge.
  2. Turning ch counts as a stitch.
  3. Please do not make your beginning Ch 3 stitches too tight, otherwise the work might Row out.
  4. Length can be varied by increasing or decreasing Rows.



Instructions for Blue Tulip:

 

Part 1:

 

With A, Ch 33

Row 1:  2dc in 3rd ch from hook, (Ch 1, sk 2 st, 3 dc in next st) 4 times, ch 1, sk 2 st, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next st, (Ch 1, sk 2 st, 3 dc in next st) 5 times. Turn. – {36 dc (turning ch counts as 1 dc), 10 ch-1 sp, 1 ch-2 sp}

Row 2: Ch 3, (sk 3 st, 3dc in ch-1 sp, ch 1) 5 times, sk 3 st, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch-2 sp, (ch1, sk 3 st, 3 dc in ch-1 sp) 5 times, sk 3 st, dc in last st. Turn. – {38 dc ( starting Ch 3 counts as 1 dc), 10 ch-1 sp, 1 ch-2 sp}

Row 3: Ch 3, sk 3 st, 1 dc in ch-1 sp, (sk 3 st, 3 dc in ch-1 sp, ch 1) 4 times, sk 3 st, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch-2 sp, (ch1, sk 3 st, 3 dc in ch-1 sp) 4 times, sk 3 st, dc in next ch-1 sp, sk 3 st, dc in last st. Turn. – {34 dc ( starting Ch 3 counts as 1 dc), 8 ch-1 sp, 1 ch-2 sp}

Part 2:

With A, Ch 3.

Row 1: 2 dc in 3rd ch from hook. Turn. – { 3 dc ( turning ch counts as 1 dc)}

Row 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in same st, Ch 2, sk 1 st,3 dc in last st. Turn.  – {6 dc (turning ch counts as 1 dc), 1 ch-2 sp}

Row 3: Ch 3, sk 3 st, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch-2 sp, sk 3 st, dc in last st. Turn. –{8 dc (turning ch counts as 1 dc), 1 ch-2 sp}

Row 4: Ch 3, 2dc in same st, ch 1,  sk 3 st, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch-2 sp, ch 1, sk 3 st, 3 dc in last st. Turn. –{12 dc (turning ch counts as 1 dc), 2 ch-1 sp, 1 ch-2 sp}

Align Part 1 and 2 on a flat surface to form a tulip shape. With A, Using a yarn needle, whip stitch the 2 pieces together.

With C, Ch 33

Row 1:  2dc in 3rd ch from hook, (Ch 1, sk 2 st, 3 dc in next st) 4 times, ch 1, sk 2 st, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next st, (Ch 1, sk 2 st, 3 dc in next st) 5 times. Turn. – {36 dc (turning ch counts as 1 dc), 10 ch-1 sp, 1 ch-2 sp}

Row 2: Ch 3, (sk 3 st, 3dc in ch-1 sp, ch 1) 5 times, sk 3 st, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch-2 sp, (ch1, sk 3 st, 3 dc in ch-1 sp) 5 times, sk 3 st, dc in last st. Turn. – {38 dc ( starting Ch 3 counts as 1 dc), 10 ch-1 sp, 1 ch-2 sp}

Part 2:

With D, Ch 3.

Row 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in same st, Ch 2, sk 1 st,3 dc in last st. Turn.  – {6 dc (turning ch counts as 1 dc), 1 ch-2 sp}

Row 3: Ch 3, sk 3 st, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch-2 sp, sk 3 st, dc in last st. Turn. –{8 dc (turning ch counts as 1 dc), 1 ch-2 sp}

Row 4: Ch 3, 2dc in same st, ch 1,  sk 3 st, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch-2 sp, ch 1, sk 3 st, 3 dc in last st. Turn. –{12 dc (turning ch counts as 1 dc), 2 ch-1 sp, 1 ch-2 sp}

Row 5: Ch 3, sk 3 st, 3 dc in ch-1 sp, ch 1, sk 3 st, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch-2 sp,ch 1, sk 3 st, 3 dc in ch-1 sp, ch1, sk-3 st, dc in last st. Bind off. –{14 dc (turning ch counts as 1 dc),2 ch-1sp, 1 ch-2 sp}

 

Align Part 1 and 2 on a flat surface to form a tulip shape. With D, Using a yarn needle, whip stitch the 2 pieces together.

 

 

Attach dowel

With A, C and D to match each Tulip, lay piece flat, position dowel parallel to top of piece, using a yarn needle, secure the piece onto the dowel at the 3 top points of the tulip. With E, Ch 40 (for hanging cord) Bind off. Tie to both ends of the dowel. Weave in all ends.

 

 

Stem

Cut out 6 pieces of 36” yarn with B, Fold in half, insert the folded portion into the ch-2 sp to form a loop, pull the 2 ends through the loop to form the stem. Trim extras to make it even.

Create a slip knot over this, if you so choose.

 

It is a great stash buster and looks wonderful in bright colors.
